We advise that you follow these steps if you've had an accident:
1. Make sure that everyone is safe and there are no injuries, switch off engine and turn on your hazard light to ensure that other drivers see you.
2. If anyone was injured call 999 or 112 on mobiles (999 is also acceptable).
3. Do not admit liability for an accident and DO NOT sign anything admitting liability.
4. By law you MUST stop if you have been involved in accident, by leaving the scene of the incident you are committing an offence under UK law.
5. Exchange details with the other driver(s), this includes: name (of driver and policy holder), address, registration numbers and details of insurance company. It can also be a good idea to ask for proof of identification if you are suspicious of the persons in question.
What to do when you get home:
1. Call your car insurance company and tell them you have been involved in an accident.
2. The car insurance broker will then arrange to have your car inspected
3. If you have this option on your policy the broker will arrange for a rental car.
4. If the accident was not your fault or anyone was injured, we would advise you contact a solicitor who will file a claim for compensation. Please look here for guidance.
